Hi Folks,

Summer had broken and we know you guys have been drinking LOTS of tequila. It's quickly becoming the spirit of choice for many of our Vintner's friends. GOOD ARTISINAL TEQUILA IS ALL THE RAGE. While there are a few established brands out there, tequila is still the Wild Wild West and we are on a mission to find the best ones out there that you haven't heard of yet. Hiatus Tequila is easily one of the best and most underrated tequilas sold in the US, get on the bus Gus.

Hiatus delivers an insanely complex tequila at a shockingly low price. Founder Kristopher DeSoto was born in Texas and lived in Mexico for many years, which allowed him to try some of the best tequilas ever made. Disappointed by the tequilas available in the US market, Kristopher created Hiatus to showcase the true agave flavor in tequila.

The Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo each express agave in a different light. Barrel influence takes a back seat for all of the tequilas and the peppery and earthy notes of this precious succulent take front stage. Hiatus takes a lot of pride in the transparency of their production process to show they truly are putting forth the best product possible. They also strongly emphasize tequila education and have made some great videos explaining different types of tequila and the differences between tequila and mezcal. Check those out below if you are interested.

The Blanco is the same price as Casamigos and is infinitely more complex. The Reposado and Anejo are significantly less expensive than the big dog tequilas on the market and definitely deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence (could they be better?). If you think Casamigos or Clase Azul are too sweet, Hiatus is the PERFECT tequila for you.

Hiatus is currently only being sold in New York, Florida, Missouri, and Indiana and has been in the United States for less than 2 years. This one is going to blow up - get it before the prices do as well.  All Hiatus Tequilas are certified gluten-free and Kosher and CONTAIN NO ADDIITVES, which is exceedingly rare in tequila.

Using the word authenticate to describe spirits can be a slippery slope, but Hiatus is striving for an authentic tequila by focusing solely on the agave flavor profile. Too many tequilas on the American market are souped up with additives and oak, masking the beauty of the agave. The reality is that the tequila served in Mexico doesn't taste anything like the vast majority of the stuff on our liquor shelves in the US. Hiatus is the perfect way to get that true tequila experience.

Flawlessly clear in the glass, our Blanco is bursting with aromas of roasted agave, fresh-cut grass, and tropical fruit. On the palate, it’s clean and complex with a luxurious mouthfeel, ideal for sipping neat or in a craft cocktail.

Our Reposado is rested 6 months in recycled American whiskey barrels, giving it a pale straw hue. Caramelized agave, roasted red pepper, and cinnamon notes give way to hazelnut and vanilla. Silky with a touch of sweetness, enjoy it on its own or in a premium cocktail.
_
Aged for a full year in recycled American oak, our Añejo pours a lush honey color. It opens with tantalizing aromas of dried herbs and candied fruit followed by hints of baking spices, cocoa, and toasted oak. Sip it after dinner or try it in a rich dessert cocktail.

HIATUS TEQUILA PHILOSOPHY AND LA COFRADIA DISTILLERY

If you’re like us, you love tequila. But so much of it is mass produced and watered down. We wanted to make real tequila.

We set out to find a family-owned distillery in the place that gave tequila its name. In the town of Tequila, in Jalisco, Mexico, we found a family that makes award-winning tequila—traditionally, transparently, and passionately. Together we crafted something unique, while staying true to how real tequila should taste. Hiatus Tequila is naturally clean yet complex, ideal for sipping neat, but also shines in a cocktail. Just as we were inspired to make our dream of this tequila come true, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a break, seek balance, and pursue what matters most.

La Cofradía, which means ‘the brotherhood,’ has been making award-winning tequila for more than 50 years. Using traditional methods combined with modern technology, the distillery produces authentic, artisanal tequila, while minimizing its environmental impact. Located on the outskirts of the town of Tequila, La Cofradía sits on the edge of an extinct volcano whose  porous foundation acts as a natural filter for the spring water used to make Hiatus. The grounds teem with blue agave plants, decades-old mango trees, native cactus, and desert flowers. The family, third-generation tequila makers, see themselves as guardians of the spirit’s tradition. In the years since we’ve started collaborating with them, we’ve come to see them that way, too. The master distiller, Luis Trejo Rodríguez, has been at La Cofradía for nearly 20 years. Born in Tequila, he learned the art of distillation and spirit aging from his family. The culture of tequila is in his blood. and our respect for his craft is something we are so proud to share with you.

There’s a lot of mystery surrounding tequila. It’s made from a plant the ancient Aztecs deemed sacred and the spirit itself is centuries old. We believe that’s where the mystery should end. We set out to create a tequila with full transparency. We want you to know the place it comes from, the people who make it, and the way it’s produced. It’s a true ground-to-glass story: it takes up to 8 years for the agave in the field to reach your glass. We do everything we can to ensure that the spirit in the bottle is a true expression of what tequila should be. The flavors and aromas are untampered with, unadulterated. Nothing added, nothing taken away.

HIATUS FOUNDER KRISTOPHER DESOTO

Our founder lives by the mantra carpe diem. Between his passion in experiencing life beyond his borders and a career in helicopter sales and marketing, he was fortunate to travel the world, visiting more than 50 countries and even scaling Mount Kilimanjaro. Raised in Texas, he was introduced to tequila early on and, since then, has traveled throughout Mexico and spent over 7 years living there. In that time, he noticed that tequilas south of the border were often different from those found on U.S. shelves, the flavors and aromas more robust and expressive. He decided that such a tequila—true tequila—should be available in the United States. His vision for a traditional, honest tequila crafted from the finest ingredients is several years in the making.
